Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao took the sheath from him. She had thread and needle in her first aid pouch, but it was hard to sew while holding a child. As she moved, her pouch accidentally dropped, and a small notebook tumbled out of it.
Xuanyuan Qi bent down to help her pick it up.
He hadn’t meant to peek, but the notebook had flipped open on its own, and a few chaotic, scribbled lines caught his eye.
“Been in the State of Yan for a month. Still hate writing policy essays.”
“Runner-up prize for the polo tournament is a thousand taels of gold. The Emperor’s so generous——I’m going to aim for second place.”
“Really want to beat Mu Chuan to a pulp.”
“Let’s sack Han Ye with a burlap ambush. Go, go, go!”
The scattered little notes she had written since arriving in the State of Yan were all recorded in the local script of the State of Yan.
Xuanyuan Qi froze in place just as he was about to pick up the notebook.
Gu Jiao assumed he was simply hindered by the restrictive armor that made it hard for him to bend down, so she didn’t think much of it. “I’ll do it myself.”
She bent over, picked up the notebook herself, tucked it back into her pouch, and secured it properly.
After that, she took needle and thread and stitched Tang Yueshan’s knife sheath back together, working through it carefully, stitch by stitch. “Here.”
Tang Yueshan looked at the knife sheath in the palm of his hand, and the corners of his mouth twitched violently. “Girl, did you sew this inside out?”
Gu Jiao replied blandly, “Oh.”
Yao shi had taught her that the knot should be hidden inside the stitchwork, but it had been too long since she last did any sewing since coming to the State of Yan, and she had completely forgotten.
“Make do with it. If you don’t like it, just throw it away.” There was absolutely no way she was going to sew it again.
Tang Yueshan’s expression darkened, but he still accepted the sheath in silence.
Gu Jiao stood up and turned to Xuanyuan Qi, saying, “It’s about time, isn’t it? We should get going.”
As she spoke, she started walking into the cave, asking along the way, “Where is the passage?”
Tang Yueshan quickly caught up with her and asked in a low voice, “That Ghost King… he’s not coming with us?”
Gu Jiao approached Black Wind King and gave the horse a reassuring pat on its back. “He’s staying behind to guard Ghost Mountain.”
Just as the words left her lips, she suddenly sensed an overwhelming and terrifying murderous aura hurtling straight toward her back. She couldn’t dodge, because if she did, Black Wind King would take the hit.
Her brow furrowed tightly. Her gaze flicked to the silver spear leaning nearby. Without hesitation, she reached back, grabbed it, and blocked the incoming attack in one fluid motion.
“Xuanyuan Qi?”
Gu Jiao stared at her attacker in disbelief.
Tang Yueshan was just as confused, glancing back and forth between the two of them with a bewildered look. “What’s going on here? Why are you two fighting? Aren’t you supposed to be on the same side?”
Xuanyuan Qi’s longsword pressed down hard against Gu Jiao’s silver spear, emitting a domineering force so powerful that Gu Jiao could feel the strain all the way up her arm, an unbearable ache that left her limbs trembling. She was on the verge of collapse.
She quickly untied the bundle from her chest and hurled it toward Tang Yueshan with a sharp, “Catch!”
Tang Yueshan caught the swaddled baby firmly in his arms.
Gu Jiao brought her second hand into the fight just in time, yet still found herself being forced backward by Xuanyuan Qi’s relentless pressure. Her entire body trembled violently, and her right knee buckled slightly. It nearly gave out under the force, as if she was about to kneel before him.
I will never kneel to you!
Clenching her teeth, Gu Jiao summoned all her strength to straighten her buckling knee and refused to go down.
But just as Xuanyuan Qi withdrew his sword, the very next moment, an even fiercer, deadlier move surged toward Gu Jiao!
Her expression turned grim.
What had gotten into Xuanyuan Qi?
Why… was he suddenly trying to kill her?
Not only was Gu Jiao bewildered, but Tang Yueshan was also completely out of the loop.
This so-called Xuanyuan Qi, the Old Ghost King, was clearly on the same side as Gu Jiao. The two of them actually got along quite well, one was a Grand General of the Xuanyuan Family, and the other the newly appointed commander of the Xuanyuan’s Black Wind Cavalry.
Ah, he almost forgot. Xiao Heng was the biological son of the Crown Princess, which meant that this girl and Xuanyuan Qi were technically relatives!
“Hey, hey, hey! Stop fighting, both of you!”
Tang Yueshan rushed over to break up the fight, but Xuanyuan Qi’s second strike came down with such overwhelming force that he was a step too late. By then, the attack was already crashing toward Gu Jiao!
Gu Jiao once again swung her silver spear to defend herself.
At the exact moment their weapons clashed, even sparks flew from the friction between them!
Tang Yueshan didn’t know whether to worry more about Gu Jiao’s safety or the possibility that the Jin troops outside might hear the commotion from their battle.
“Hold on, girl! I’m going to check outside!”
With awkward movements, Tang Yueshan carried the child in his arms and jogged over to the crevice outside the cave. He leaned in and listened carefully for any noise coming from the back of the mountain.
The patrolling Jin soldiers had already left, probably reassigned to dig tunnels in the village.
He let out a long sigh of relief. “All right then, carry on with your fight.”
Uh, wait, no!
What fight?!
They were all on the same side!
Tang Yueshan hurried back into the cave to break them up again.
In just the short time it took him to go back and forth, Gu Jiao and Xuanyuan Qi had already exchanged seven or eight moves. She barely managed to block the first two, but each of the following blows knocked her to the ground.
By the time Tang Yueshan returned, Gu Jiao had just been sent flying by a powerful palm strike from Xuanyuan Qi. Her whole body slammed into the rocky wall behind her, and she coughed up a mouthful of blood on the spot.
Tang Yueshan’s expression changed drastically. No way. This girl had fought at the Zhao’s border and hadn’t been injured this badly even then!
Was Xuanyuan Qi actually serious?
Did he really want to kill this girl?
Was he out of his mind?!
No time to think. Tang Yueshan’s gaze darkened, and he shot forward, raising his palm to strike at Xuanyuan Qi!
Xuanyuan Qi caught sight of him from the corner of his eye, turned sharply, and met Tang Yueshan’s strike head-on with his own palm.
A terrifying force, like explosive black gunpowder, erupted inside Tang Yueshan’s body. The baby in his arms wailed in fright. Tang Yueshan’s eyes flickered, and he hastily redirected half of his internal force to protect the child.
But in doing so, Xuanyuan Qi’s full force punched through his defenses and surged straight into his dantian.
Tang Yueshan dropped to the ground, a sharp pain in his chest forcing a mouthful of blood from his lips.
“Don’t come over.” Gu Jiao said, using her silver spear to prop herself up as she slowly stood. Not a trace of fear flickered in her eyes. She casually wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, her silver spear pointing directly at Xuanyuan Qi. “I’ll defeat him myself.”
That might have been the most outrageously bold thing Tang Yueshan had ever heard in his entire life.
Defeat Xuanyuan Qi? That kind of monster? Girl, are you sure you didn’t hit your head too hard?

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, “Scared?”
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, “The mansion in the western suburbs…if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?”
Shi Dai replied, “Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, “Don’t abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, “Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah.”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
