Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Everyone had their area of expertise. Tang Yueshan excelled in archery. In a battle of arrows, even ten Xuanyuan Qis wouldn’t be able to match him. But when it came to close combat, he knew he wasn’t Xuanyuan Qi’s equal.
It wasn’t that Tang Yueshan’s martial skills were weak. It was that Xuanyuan Qi’s were terrifyingly strong.
After all those years cultivating on Ghost Mountain, Xuanyuan Qi had reached an unfathomable realm. Even someone like Long Yi wouldn’t be able to injure him easily now.
Gu Jiao panted heavily, her gaze sharp and unyielding like a wolf’s as she stared at Xuanyuan Qi. “At least I lasted two moves against you this time. Back in that graveyard… I couldn’t even take one. But now, I’m going all out. You’d better not——”
Smack!
Before she could finish speaking, Xuanyuan Qi sent her flying with a single flick of his sword.
Gu Jiao: “…”
Just as she was about to crash into the stone wall again, Gu Jiao twisted her body midair, kicked off the wall with one foot, and used the momentum to spring back toward Xuanyuan Qi, spear in hand, launching a full-on assault!
From this moment forward, she would no longer defend.
Offense was the best defense!
With one strike after another, Gu Jiao unleashed the full force of the Xuanyuan Seven Forms, pushing them to their absolute limit.
Tang Yueshan was left utterly stunned by what he saw. This little girl’s martial skills has clearly improved significantly since their time in the State of Zhao.
Speaking of which, what kind of spear technique is that? Its power is immense, even Xuanyuan Qi is forced to retreat!
However, Xuanyuan Qi only stepped back for the briefest moment before launching an even fiercer assault on Gu Jiao.
All her paths of retreat were completely sealed off. If Gu Jiao failed to withstand this strike, the only outcome would be death beneath the blade of his longsword!
But she had already exhausted the seven forms of the Xuanyuan Spear Technique. She had no techniques left to use.
Was Xuanyuan Qi really trying to kill her?
Or was he simply trying to scare her?
If it were the latter, then he should have already seen that she had reached her absolute limit; there was no way she could survive this next move.
Yet Xuanyuan Qi showed no signs of holding back. His longsword swept forward like a rainbow, slashing directly toward Gu Jiao’s head with deadly precision!
Gu Jiao could practically smell death closing in. In her mind’s eye, she could already see blood spraying three feet high and her severed head tumbling across the ground with a sickening roll.
“Gu Jiao, when you return, let’s get married.”
“JiaoJiao, are you going off to war again?”
“But war is very exhausting. I don’t want JiaoJiao to suffer!”
“Only three pieces a day, you can’t eat more than that. When you’ve finished them all, I’ll be back.”
She had to go back…
She couldn’t die here!
A cold glint flashed through Gu Jiao’s eyes, a wave of heat surged across her chest, and her mind exploded with a roar. Whether driven by instinct or muscle memory from countless practices, she suddenly reversed her grip on her silver spear, spun above her own head, and swung down at Xuanyuan Qi’s longsword with the force of someone cleaving mountains and seas!
Tang Yueshan’s breath caught in his throat!
There was a sharp crack as their weapons collided. Sparks flew in every direction as Gu Jiao’s spear scraped across Xuanyuan Qi’s sword. Then, using the stone wall behind her as a foothold, she pushed off with her toes, flipped through the air, and lunged straight for Xuanyuan Qi’s forehead!
Her speed suddenly soared to an unimaginable level. Even Tang Yueshan could only catch glimpses of afterimages trailing behind her movements.
Clang!
Xuanyuan Qi blocked her spear, and in the same motion, he caught her by the throat with his bare hand. “You lost.”
Gu Jiao replied calmly, “Not yet.”
Xuanyuan Qi frowned slightly and glanced down, only to see that Gu Jiao’s other hand was gripping a dagger, its tip pressed firmly against his dantian.
The killing intent in Xuanyuan Qi’s eyes faded. He spoke in a faint voice, “To have made it this far… is already impressive.”
Gu Jiao, drained of strength, leaned heavily on her silver spear to stay upright.
In truth, she had still lost. Her dagger to his dantian might severely injure him, but if he twisted her neck in return, she would die on the spot.
Tang Yueshan finally caught on to what was happening. Holding the child in his arms, he looked toward Xuanyuan Qi, his expression dark and unpleasant. “So all this time… you were just testing her martial skills? Then you really went way too far! If she hadn’t pulled off those last two moves, she would already be a corpse at your feet!”
Xuanyuan Qi said nothing. He simply turned and walked deeper into the cave. “All the mechanisms in the tunnel have been activated. We can leave now.”
The Black Wind King trotted over and gently rubbed its head against Gu Jiao to comfort her.
Gu Jiao took a deep breath, staring at Xuanyuan Qi’s retreating figure. A strange, indescribable feeling welled up in her chest.
Xuanyuan Qi hadn’t held back in the slightest just now, as if he had been absolutely certain… that she would be able to unleash those final two techniques.
But the Xuanyuan Spear Technique only had seven forms. Those last two moves had been something she had forced herself to create in the heat of the moment.
Was this man… pushing her to unlock her potential?
Aside from that possibility, she really couldn’t think of any other explanation.
Once Gu Jiao had regained a bit of strength, she turned around to gather up the items that had fallen to the ground during the fight.
“Hmm? Where did it go?”
She searched the area carefully.
“What’s missing?” Tang Yueshan asked.
“A small booklet.” Gu Jiao replied.
It contained intelligence she had recorded from Gongsun Yu’s study. Worried she might forget it, she had carefully sketched all the diagrams and notes from memory while waiting for Xuanyuan Qi to regain consciousness.
That booklet was incredibly important. It not only held the key to winning the entire campaign, but also concerned the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens in Pucheng.
“Found it, it’s here!” Gu Jiao bent down and retrieved the booklet from a crack between the stones. She flipped through it carefully to ensure not a single page was missing, and only then did she and Tang Yueshan, each leading their warhorse by the reins, set off to catch up with Xuanyuan Qi.
They entered a relatively tall stone passage through a stone door, but despite its height, the path was still too narrow for two people to walk side by side.
Moreover, both the Black Wind King and the Black Wind Cavalry horse had to lower their heads as they moved forward, or it would be extremely difficult for them to proceed through such a tight space.
The two horses had never been trained for underground travel, and as soon as they entered, the eight-year-old Black Wind Cavalry horse began to grow restless, with even the Black Wind King showing clear signs of discomfort.
Gu Jiao turned around and gently stroked his mane to calm him down. “It’s alright, Big Boss.”
The Black Wind King forced himself to stay calm, while Tang Yueshan spent the entire journey whispering softly to soothe his own warhorse, more gently, in fact, than he ever spoke to his own son.
No one knew exactly how long they walked, but eventually, they reached the exit.
Xuanyuan Qi pressed a hidden mechanism, and the cool, pale moonlight filtered in through the opening. A refreshing night breeze greeted them head-on, and everyone finally drew in deep breaths of long-missed fresh air.
The underground tunnel did have ventilation shafts that connected to the surface, hidden by clumps of grass or brambles, but the airflow was so poor that everyone had broken into a sweat from the stuffy heat.
The three of them and their two horses finally emerged from the tunnel.
They found themselves in an abandoned village surrounded on three sides by mountains. To the north lay the official road.
They had come out from what used to be a cattle shed, and the road was less than a hundred meters away.
“Well then, this is where we part ways.” Gu Jiao said, bidding farewell to Xuanyuan Qi.
Without uttering a word, Xuanyuan Qi walked over to the Black Wind King, stepped on the stirrup with one foot, swung his leg over, and mounted the horse in a single smooth motion.
Gu Jiao blinked in surprise.
With a blank expression, Xuanyuan Qi extended his hand toward her.
Gu Jiao was momentarily stunned, then arrogantly placed her small hand in his. “Weren’t you not coming with us? What’s this now? Decided not to stay behind at Ghost Mountain after all?”
“I changed my mind.” Xuanyuan Qi replied coolly, and with one strong pull, he hoisted Gu Jiao up onto the horse.
Gu Jiao ended up seated behind him.
It was… quite sudden.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, “Scared?”
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, “The mansion in the western suburbs…if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?”
Shi Dai replied, “Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, “Don’t abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, “Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah.”
Jiang Baiyan: …?
He hasn’t finished his lines yet though…
